Most .40 S&W defensive loads run heavy, with 180 grains a common choice. This SBR load goes the other way: a 115-grain Lehigh Defense Xtreme Defense bullet moving at around 1,400 fps, built on a different idea of how a defensive bullet should work.

There's no hollow point to open. The Xtreme Defense is a solid copper Fluid Transfer Monolithic (FTM) with radial flutes cut into the nose, so it looks a bit like a Phillips screwdriver tip. Lehigh states that the flutes force fluid energy inward and back out as high-pressure spikes, producing a permanent wound cavity two to four times greater than a flat or round nose bullet. The bullet itself stays intact for deep, straight penetration, which Lehigh puts at 18 inches. Lehigh also says barriers like drywall and heavy clothing don't compromise its performance the way they can with conventional hollow points. It's an unconventional round, and a capable one in defensive, tactical, and law enforcement use.
