Factory-seconds primers may either have failed a cosmetic inspection and or might have a slightly higher misfire rate (which is still incredibly low). They are safe and great for practice. They come off the same production lines as first-quality primers. We recommend them for volume range and practice loads, and first-quality primers for match and hunting ammunition where absolute consistency matters most.

Magnum primers deliver a hotter, longer ignition flame for large cases, heavy charges of slow-burning ball powders, and very cold conditions. Standard primers suit most common loads. When switching between them, reduce your charge and work back up using published load data.

Primer Sizes Explained

Small Pistol (SP)

Common cartridges: 9mm Luger, 38 Special, 40 S&W, and standard 357 Magnum loads. Use small pistol magnum primers for heavy 357 Magnum loads and ball powders.

Large Pistol (LP)

Common cartridges: 45 ACP, 44 Special, and 45 Colt. Use large pistol magnum primers for 44 Magnum, cold-weather loads, and ball powders.

Small Rifle (SR)

Common cartridges: 223 Rem/5.56, 6mm ARC, 6.5 Grendel, and 300 Blackout. Use small rifle magnum primers for 17 Rem and magnum small-case loads.

Large Rifle (LR)

Common cartridges: 308 Win, 30-06, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 270 Win. Use large rifle magnum primers for 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 338 Lapua, and safari calibers.

Rule of thumb: standard primers for standard cases and powders; magnum primers for magnum cases, heavy charges of slow ball powders, or very cold weather. Always work loads up from published data when changing primers, even between brands.

What Are Factory-Seconds Primers?

Factory-seconds primers may have failed a manufacturer’s cosmetic inspection, such as off-color cups, minor finish blemishes, mixed lot packaging, or may have a slightly higher misfire rate, which is still incredibly low. They come off the same production lines as the name-brand primers they didn’t quite become, at a significantly lower price, which makes them a favorite for high-volume range ammo and practice loads. They’re one of the most popular things we sell. For match loads and hunting ammo where absolute consistency matters most, we recommend first-quality primers; for volume shooting, seconds are the best value in reloading.
