Twenty-two rounds is a strange number until you've done load development. Then it's the only number that makes sense: four charge weights, five rounds each, two slots left for foulers. That's a complete ladder in one box. Label the lid — a silver paint marker reads well on the smoke-tinted shell, or a strip of painter's tape takes a pen and peels clean off polypropylene — and come back three weeks later to a box that tells you what you did. Your memory won't.

The RF22-LM is MTM's large-magnum flip-top, cut deep for cartridges that don't fit anything else. Twenty-two rounds per box, twenty-four boxes to the case, 528 rounds of capacity. Enough to segregate brass by firing count, by annealing batch, or by which rifle it came out of, and still have boxes left for loaded ammunition. The Clear Smoke shell is translucent enough to see that a box is loaded without opening it, dark enough that the contents aren't on display.

What else goes in it. The slot is .66 inches square and 3.84 inches deep, which covers most of the belted magnum family — 300 Winchester Magnum, 7mm Remington Magnum, 338 Winchester Magnum, 264 Winchester Magnum, 375 H&H, 300 H&H, 375 Ruger, 458 Winchester Magnum, 458 Lott, 340 and 270 Weatherby, the WSM cartridges. Measure your loaded round: anything under 3.84 inches overall and .66 inches at the head will seat. Shorter standard-length cartridges like 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 will drop in, too.

For travel, hard-sided is the whole point. Airlines and the TSA require checked ammunition in its original packaging or in a fiber, wood, plastic, or metal box specifically designed to carry ammunition. A flip-top ammo box is exactly that description. A freezer bag is exactly not. Confirm quantity limits with your carrier before you fly — the rules move, and the agent at the counter has heard every argument already.

Injection-molded polypropylene, produced at MTM's plant in Dayton, Ohio. Full-length hinged lid with a snap-lock latch. The material will not warp, crack, chip, peel, expand, or contract.

Then there are the other twenty-three boxes. A .66-inch square hole 3.84 inches deep turns out to be a broadly useful piece of geometry, and nobody at MTM specified what has to occupy it.

Take one to the bench: drill bits, taps, transfer punches, Allen keys, router bits, X-Acto blades. One to the tackle shelf: jig heads, streamer flies, spinner blades, swivels, sinkers. One to the truck: fuses, cotter pins, hitch pins, spare bulbs, valve stems. One to the workbench drawer for set screws, sorted by size instead of by whichever coffee can was closest.

One for the craft table — paint markers, Copic pens, brushes, thread spools, bobbins, knitting notions, seed packets rolled tight. One for the tabletop shelf: twenty-two dice sets, or miniature paints and the brushes to go with them. One for the camp box: waterproof matches, ferro rods, tinder tabs. One for golf tees, which will hold considerably more than twenty-two. One for AA cells, SD cards, printer nozzles, and the cables nobody can identify. One for a week of vitamins that survives a suitcase. One for slim-ring-gauge cigars.

And one, unremarked, for lipsticks, glosses, mascara, brow pencils, and brushes, standing upright in a case that will not pop open in checked luggage. Say nothing about where it came from. The polypropylene doesn't care what's in it, and neither do we.
