Hey, this is Bill with Raven Rocks Precision. I’m going to talk about 9mm full metal jacket, or FMJ, bullets today. Click to read entire video transcription
Full metal jacket bullets—often just referred to as FMJ—are the backbone of nearly all the handgun bullets we sell. They feature a lead core with a copper jacket, and the bases are exposed lead bases. This is different from a jacketed hollow point, which has a copper base and an open hollow point at the tip of the bullet.
These bullets are really good for standard target, range, and training practice. Some folks also use them for competition, although many prefer jacketed hollow points to reduce lead fouling when shooting in high volume. For most people, an inexpensive full metal jacket bullet is one of the best choices. They’re well-made, and you don’t have to worry about maximum velocities, especially for handgun use.
We currently have several types in stock. Dead Nuts is essentially our house brand—we’re partnered with them—so you’ll see a lot of Dead Nuts bullets available. We also offer other rotating deals from time to time. We’ve had DKC, SIG, Armscor, and MFS bullets in the past. Many of those are available for a limited time—once the deal is gone, it’s gone.
With Dead Nuts bullets, though, we expect to always have a steady supply and continue restocking. So, if you’re looking to work up a load you can repeat consistently in the future, we highly recommend checking out the Dead Nuts bullets on our website.
Again, full metal jacket bullets are a great option for many reloaders. If you’re new to reloading, they’re especially ideal. It’s easy to find load data for them, and they’re straightforward for building a safe and repeatable load.

FAQs for FMJ Bullet
What are 9mm FMJ bullets?
9mm FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) bullets have a soft lead core completely encased in a copper or gilding metal jacket. This design helps ensure smooth feeding, less barrel fouling, and consistent accuracy—making them great for target shooting, training, and competition.
Are your 9mm FMJ bullets plated or fully jacketed?
Our 9mm FMJs are genuine full metal jackets—not just plated—providing durable jackets fully covering the lead core for reliable performance. While many of our products are American-made, some components and bullets are sourced internationally to give you the best value and availability.
What bullet weights do you offer in 9mm FMJ?
We carry popular weights like 124 grain round nose FMJs that are perfect for USPSA, IDPA, or range plinking. We also have other weights available depending on your needs—just check our website or reach out.
How do these bullets perform in competition or training?
Our 9mm FMJs feed smoothly through everything from Glock pistols to PCCs with consistent accuracy and reliability shot after shot. They’re a favorite for IDPA and USPSA shooters who want dependable performance at an unbeatable price.
Can I reload these bullets myself?
Absolutely. We recommend consulting many popular sources for load data. We also new primed and unprimed handgun brass.
What seating depth and crimp should I use when reloading?
We seat our 124 grain FMJs to an overall length (OAL) of about 1.10 inches with just enough crimp to remove case flare but not so much that it hinders feeding. Always test your loads in your firearm to confirm reliable chambering.
Do your FMJ bullets meet any military or law enforcement standards?
While some of our FMJ are NATO-spec, we do not usually include that information in the listings. We do offer frangible bullets designed to meet MIL/LE requirements for training environments where ricochet reduction is critical.
How does Raven Rocks Precision ensure quality in their FMJ bullets?
We QC every batch for weight consistency, diameter accuracy, and concentricity to make sure you get dependable seating depth and uniform performance every time you reload.
Are these bullets safe to use indoors or on steel targets?
Our standard full metal jackets are great for range use but not designed to fragment on impact like frangible rounds—so be mindful when shooting steel targets at close ranges. For steel ranges or close-quarters training, check out our frangible options instead.
Where can I buy your 9mm FMJ bullets?
You can grab them directly from our website where we offer competitive pricing on quantities from single boxes up to bulk packs. Plus, keep an eye out as we occasionally bundle them with handgun brass.
Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) bullets are a cornerstone of modern shooting — whether you’re honing accuracy at the range, running tactical drills, or reloading for consistent performance. Known for their durability, affordability, and clean penetration, FMJ bullets are encased in a copper or brass jacket that covers the lead core, reducing barrel fouling and enhancing feeding reliability in semi-automatic firearms.
At Raven Rocks Precision, we specialize in premium FMJ bullets, with a strong focus on the ever-popular 9mm caliber. Whether you’re a weekend shooter stocking up or a reloader fine-tuning your rounds, our in-stock inventory is tailored to shooters who demand performance without compromise.
What Are FMJ Bullets?
An FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) bullet consists of a soft lead core fully encapsulated in a harder metal shell — typically copper or a copper alloy. This design minimizes lead exposure and allows the bullet to maintain its shape upon impact with soft targets, which is why it’s ideal for training rather than terminal ballistics.
FMJ bullets do not expand like hollow points. Instead, they penetrate targets cleanly and often exit, making them less suitable for self-defense but perfect for target practice, military drills, and range qualification.
Common characteristics of FMJ bullets:
- Consistent feed in semi-automatics
- Minimal barrel residue
- Stable flight and accuracy
- Lower cost per round
Who Buys FMJ Bullets — And Why?
The FMJ bullet remains the most widely purchased projectile in the United States. According to data from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, over 60% of centerfire pistol ammunition sold annually in the U.S. is FMJ.
Buyers typically include:
- Recreational shooters: Those who train regularly at the range
- Law enforcement and military: FMJs are used in most service training
- Competitive shooters: For volume-based drills and IDPA-style matches
- Reloaders: FMJ bullets offer a cost-effective way to create high-volume rounds with consistent performance
At Raven Rocks Precision, our customers often purchase FMJ 9mm bullets in bulk to keep training costs low and round counts high.
Reloading with FMJ Bullets
Reloaders love FMJs for one main reason: consistency. They seat easily, deliver reliable chamber pressures, and are compatible with a wide range of powders and primers. At Raven Rocks Precision, we carry FMJ projectiles optimized for handloaders, including options with cannelures for secure crimping.
Key Considerations for Reloaders:
- Weight Options: 9mm FMJ bullets are available in 115gr, 124gr, and 147gr. Lighter bullets like 115gr are common for practice, while 124gr offers better recoil balance.
- Materials: Our bullets are primarily copper-jacketed over lead cores. No steel-core options, making them safe for indoor ranges.
- Base Style: Available in both flat base and boat tail, though flat base is more common in pistol calibers.
- Cost-Per-Round: Buying in bulk (e.g., 1,000-round boxes) can lower the cost to as little as $0.08–$0.12 per bullet, depending on current market conditions.
