Hey, this is Bill with Raven Rock Precision. Today we’re going to talk about 9mm JHP bullets—jacketed hollow points. Click to read entire video transcription
When most folks talk about jacketed hollow points, they usually think about self-defense. The opening at the tip of the bullet allows the petals to flower upon impact. When the bullet hits a target, it expands, and that expansion increases damage within the wound cavity.
That said, we actually sell the majority of our jacketed hollow points to people looking for a more accurate bullet. The JHPs we carry are all high-quality and made in the U.S. Right now, I’m holding a Sierra 147-grain Sports Master that we have on sale. We also carry a wide variety of Dead Nuts JHPs and jacketed hollow points from other manufacturers.
One important thing to note about JHP bullets is that the base is fully enclosed in a copper jacket, unlike FMJ bullets which have an exposed lead base. This design reduces lead fouling in the barrel, especially helpful for high-volume shooters. Over time, that cleaner performance can lead to better long-term results.
Jacketed hollow points are versatile. Many customers use them for self-defense. You can load your own carry ammo with our bullets. In fact, Dead Nuts produces bullets specifically designed for defense, and these are used by several ammunition manufacturers across the United States for their defensive loads.
If you’re into competition shooting, JHPs are also a great choice. They’re known for their consistency and precision. Our Dead Nuts JHPs are ideal for developing a reliable, repeatable load that performs well under pressure. And right now, we have them on sale.
So go ahead and check out the jacketed hollow points section on our website. We’re confident you’ll be happy with the selection we offer. Read Less
10mm JHP FAQ
What does 10mm JHP mean?
It means 10mm Jacketed Hollow Point, a bullet with a copper jacket and a hollow cavity for expansion.
Is 10mm JHP good for concealed carry?
Yes, if you can manage the recoil. It offers superior stopping power and expansion.
What grain weight should I choose for defense?
165–180 grains is common for defensive use; 200 grains for hunting.
Can I reload 10mm JHP bullets?
Yes. Reloaders can optimize loads for specific needs, from low-recoil practice rounds to heavy hunting loads.
Is 10mm JHP better than FMJ?
For defense and hunting, JHP is superior due to controlled expansion. FMJ is better suited for range training.
Will 10mm JHP overpenetrate?
With quality JHP designs, overpenetration is minimized compared to FMJ.
What’s the effective range of 10mm JHP?
25–50 yards for defense, up to ~75 yards for hunting with the right load.
The 10mm JHP (10mm Jacketed Hollow Point) is one of the most versatile bullet types available for shooters who demand power, accuracy, and controlled expansion. Whether you’re looking for 10mm hollow point bullets for reloading target ammo, premium self-defense ammunition, or hunting loads, this bullet design excels in scenarios where both penetration and expansion matter.
The hollow point cavity in a JHP projectile allows the bullet to expand upon impact, creating a wider wound channel while reducing the risk of over-penetration — making it ideal for personal defense and ethical hunting.
Why Choose 10mm JHP Bullets?
- Stopping Power – The 10mm Auto cartridge is renowned for delivering muzzle velocities exceeding 1,200 fps and energy that rivals or surpasses the .357 Magnum.
- Controlled Expansion – JHP bullets open up upon impact, transferring maximum energy to the target.
- Versatility – Equally effective for concealed carry, home defense, hunting, and action shooting sports.
- Reloading Flexibility – Available in multiple weights and profiles for customized performance.
Popular Grain Weights for 10mm JHP
Grain Weight | Velocity (fps) | Best Use |
---|---|---|
155 gr | 1,350 | Flatter trajectory, lighter recoil |
165 gr | ~1,300 | Balanced defense |
180 gr | ~1,250 | Most popular, deep penetration |
200 gr | ~1,150 | Heavy-hitting hunting load |
10mm JHP for Reloaders
Reloaders benefit from the flexibility to fine-tune 10mm jacketed hollow point bullets for specific applications:
- Brass: Starline, JAG, and Nosler brass are top choices.
- Primers: Large pistol primers ensure reliable ignition.
- Powders: Blue Dot, Accurate No. 9, and Longshot are common for balancing velocity with manageable pressures.
- Seating Depth: Follow manufacturer recommendations — improper crimping can cause feeding issues or accuracy loss.
Self-Defense Applications
When loading 10mm hollow point ammo for defense:
- Test out different bullet weights.
- Test your chosen load in your firearm for cycling reliability.
- Consider recoil management — practice is essential.
Hunting With 10mm JHP
Hunters favor 10mm JHP for:
- Deer, hogs, and medium game within 50–75 yards.
- Rapid, humane kills due to controlled expansion.
- Reliable penetration with heavier bullet weights (180–200 gr).
- Bear defense, especially when loaded with heavy hard cast bullets.
