Safari

Hey, it’s Bill with Raven Rocks Precision and today I have Dangerous Game projectiles, brass, and ammunition in front of me. I’ll talk about why it’s popular and what the use cases are, starting with what Dangerous Game or safari ammo actually is. Click to read entire video transcription The components here are used to make ammunition for safari or dangerous-game rifles, which are designed to hunt large animals — specifically the “Big Five” that hunters travel to Africa to pursue. This ammunition enables hunters to take down some of the largest animals in the world; it needs to be reliable, effective, and matched to the right animal.

What I have here spans several classic calibers. For example, the Norma PH line of loaded ammunition is loaded with Woodley projectiles. These Woodley FMJ rounds come in a collectible case with nickel-plated brass and a red velvet interior — a premium product with a specific use case. This is a .375 with a 300-grain projectile, one of Woodley’s heavy-duty variants. Woodley products come out of Australia and hunters have relied on them for decades for terminal performance.

For handloaders, I’ve also got brass for classic calibers like .416 Rigby, and brass for double-rifle cartridges such as .500 Nitro Express. We also carry reputable Nosler products; for instance, their African line is loaded with 400-grain Partitions suitable for .375/.416/.500 class rifles. I also have a .470 Nitro loaded with a 500-grain solid; some rounds use nickel-plated brass to aid feeding, though standard brass performs well too.

Solids and soft/partitioned bullets are commonly paired — many hunters use a combination of solid bullets and protected-point or Partition designs. Woodley currently produces round-nose soft-nose and protected-point projectiles, and they are also shipping hydrostatic solids. Some FMJ variants for rim-mag cartridges may be limited in availability, but their solids are an excellent example of purpose-built projectiles.

Bottom line: these projectiles, brass, and loaded rounds serve a very specific purpose — to reliably, effectively, and ethically take large game in places like Africa. They’re tailored to perform well in classic dangerous-game rifles and carry a legacy and history that make them interesting both as components and as part of a broader hunting tradition. Read Less
